Vision

Forest Watch Indonesia, abbreviated to FWI, is an independent forest monitoring network incorporating individuals and organizations committed to fostering a transparent forestry data and information management system which can ensure just and sustainable forest management. FWI believes that the vision can only be realized if forestry data and information can be fast and easily accessed and at the same time forest management is free from detrimental practices that may degrade forest’s carrying capacity and generate conflicts.

Mission

To achieve the above-mentioned vision, FWI has deliberately set its strategic role as part of the civil society to encourage acceleration of democratization in forest allocation and management through the following activities:

  • Fostering transparency in forestry data and information through development and enhancement of decentralized and independent forest monitoring nodes in various regions that are ecologically significant to be protected, preserved and managed in a sustainable way;
  • Encouraging the public, notably other independent civil society organizations, to actively and constructively participate in political processes related to forest management through dissemination of recent forestry data and information, which are processed from accurate and irrefutable field evidence;
  • Helping policy-makers with provision of alternative data and information on forestry and forest resources (apart from the existing official data);

Identifying and promoting policies and practices that have been proved to be able to preserve and conserve forests, and ensure justice for the local communities.
